In the previous version of the Bethesda System, the finding of endo- metrial cells was reported only for post- menopausal women. However, in the 2001 Bethesda System, endometrial cells are noted if the woman is 40 years of age or older, regardless of the date of the last menstrual period.Studies in the 2001 Bethesda System era found little evidence to support the role of cervical cytology in uncovering endometrial cancer in women under the age of 45 .To improve the predictive value of exfoliated endometrial cells, it is now recommended that benign-appearing endometrial cells be reported in women 45 years of age or older.
