Overview of the USCAP Annual Meeting
There are seven educational components of the meeting: Companion Meeting Symposia; Long Course; Plenary Lectures; Scientific Abstracts; Short Courses; Special Courses; Specialty Conferences. The general descriptions of these offerings are below. Please use the links to see the specific details about the 2008 presentations.
General Registration:
A General Registration fee is required for admittance to any aspect of the Annual Meeting. The amount charged varies according to membership status - USCAP members, USCAP Junior Member, Senior non-member or non-member resident/fellow. The General Registration fee allows you to attend the platform and/or poster presentations of scientific abstracts; the Timely Topics Lecture; the Maude Abbott Lecture; the evening specialty conferences; the commercial exhibits; the Wine & Cheese Reception. Additional registration fees are required to attend the Companion Meetings, Long Course, Short Courses and Special Courses.
CONTINUING MEDICAL EDUCATION CREDITS
The United States and Canadian Academy of Pathology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians. After the meeting there is a link on the USCAP website to the CME/SAM Claim Form.
AMA Category 1 Continuing Medical Education Credits
The Academy designates that the educational activities of the Annual Meeting qualify for a maximum of 55 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit(s)™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

ABP Self-Assessment Module Credits
The Academy is approved by the American Board of Pathology to offer Self-Assessment Module (SAMs) credits. Each year a diplomate participating in Maintenance of Certification must have a total of 10 hours of continuing medical education credits in the form of SAMs, plus an additional 25 hours of regular AMA Category 1 CME. Selected short courses qualify for 3 SAMs credits each and are identified at the end of the course description. To earn SAMs credits, you will be required to take and pass an online exam for each course you wish to claim as 3 SAMs credits. During and after the Annual Meeting, there will be a link to the short course SAM tests on the USCAP website. You may not claim both CME and SAM credits for the same short course.
Companion Society Symposia:
Companion Meeting Symposia are presented on Saturday night, Sunday morning, afternoon and night. Handouts for these symposia are available on the USCAP website prior to the Annual Meeting, and will remain on the website after the meeting. They may be printed out if desired. These are three hour sessions on topics of timely interest in a particular area of specialty pathology. There is an additional fee required to attend Companion Meetings, but one single fee allows you to go to any, or all, of these symposia. There is a continuing influx of new information needed for the practice of pathology, and the Companion Meetings afford the opportunity to bring to the participants the latest information from pathology sub-specialties.
Scientific Abstracts:
Scientific Abstracts are presented as either oral Platform Sessions or as Posters, both of which provide a forum for the exchange of views for basic science and clinicopathological studies. General Registration fee covers admission to all of these sessions. Platforms are presented on Monday and Tuesday. Posters are presented on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The posters in the Stowell-Orbison Award Competition for Pathologists-in-Training are presented on Monday morning. All of the scientific abstracts for the current meeting may be viewed online on the USCAP website in early January, 2008. Abstracts remain available on the website for three years. In addition, after the meeting, some of the poster presentations are also available to be viewed online.
Specialty Conferences:
Specialty Conferences are organ based case discussions presented on Sunday through Thursday nights. These are two hour sessions. Images and case histories are posted on the USCAP website a month before the Annual Meeting so they may be studied in advance. The handout with diagnoses and references for each conference will be posted on the USCAP website the morning after the conference, and will remain available after the meeting and can be printed out if desired.
Special Courses:
Practicing pathologists require familiarization with new and emerging methodologies. The purpose of the special courses is to present an in-depth analysis of specialized techniques applied to diagnostic pathology. These techniques, which have come from a variety of fields, are being applied to diagnostic anatomic pathology with increasing frequency, making it mandatory for practicing pathologists to be aware of the applications and limitations of these techniques and approaches. As many members of the Academy will not have in-depth knowledge of these advanced methodologies, courses are designed and modified regularly to provide this information There is a separate registration fee required to attend the Two Special Courses which are:
Basic Molecular Pathology in Cancer - scheduled Monday 8:00 a.m. - 1:00 pm
Advanced Molecular Pathology - scheduled Tuesday 8:00 am - 1:00 p.m.
Plenary Lectures
| | Nathan Kaufman Timely Topic Lecture Timely Topics Lecture is a presentation of a "hot or emerging topic" by a well recognized authority in the field of pathology. This lecture is scheduled for 4:30 p.m. on Monday and admission is covered by the General Registration Fee.
Maude Abbott Lecture The Maude Abbott lecture is presented by a well recognized authority in contemporary pathology. It is usually clinically oriented and is scheduled on Tuesday afternoon, after the Business Meeting and Awards presentations (approximately 5:00 pm). Admission is covered by the General Registration Fee. |
Long Course :
This course is scheduled for all day Wednesday. There is a separate registration fee to attend the course. The primary objective of the long course is to provide an in depth systematic review of recent advances in the pathology of a specific organ system, disease process, or other major topic of general concern. The secondary objectives of this course include an update on the pathobiology of a specific organ system or topic and how this new knowledge affects our understanding of specific disease processes. A new topic is presented annually, and its choice is dictated by perceived need.
Short Courses:
Short courses are three hour sessions and are scheduled on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday. These half-day courses require a separate fee for admission. The course description for each course defines the target audience, the topics to be covered, and what materials are provided. Each aspect of diagnostic and academic pathology changes continuously and rapidly. Pathologists need to maintain expertise and to be exposed to new ideas in areas of study where their training, reading and practice do not lead them regularly

| | Business Meeting is held on Tuesday afternoon, beginning at 4:00 p.m. There is no fee and everyone is welcome to attend.
Awards Ceremony immediately follows the Business Meeting at approximately 4:40 pm on Tuesday. There is no fee and everyone is welcome to attend.
Wine and Cheese Reception is held on Tuesday evening at 6:00 p.m., and is free for all attendees.
Exhibit Hall is open on Monday and Tuesday from 9:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and on Wednesday 9:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. There is no fee for admission, but you must wear your name tag.
An Internet Café will be available near the Registration Desk - these computers may be used for checking emails, and for completing online evaluations of the various offerings. There will be a 15 minute time limit per session in order to allow everyone to have equal access. | |
