These structures are corpora amylaceae - spherical concretions of polymerized carbohydrates in astrocytic processes that occur with aging. They are best found in the vicinity of leptomeningeal surface, especially in basal forebrain. If they are found all over the brain parenchyma and the patient has severe neurologic symptoms and deficits, it is a rare genetic metabolic disorder known as polyglucosan body disease.
