There are neoplastic cells with vacuolated cytoplasm, scattered occasional large cells with hyperchromatic nuclei, inflammation (figure 4) and eosinophilic granular bodies (figure 5). Such histopathology in a child's brain tumor stongly suggests pleomorphic xanthoastrocytoma. The majority of PXA are WHO grade II, but anaplastic examples have been reported based on brisk mitotic activity and tumor necrosis. How often do you find mitotic figures?
