- What are they in a conventional Pap of 42 years

It was my case of Pap when I was cyto fellow in the University of Southern California. I did not know what they were until my attending cytopathologist told me.

I did not find better cells than these two cells. They detached from placenta so they can have tail. One cell looks like glove. They can be confused with multinucleated histiocytes. Histiocytes are common in Pap smears, but syncytiotrophoblasts are rare in Pap smears. Syncytiotrophoblasts show nuclei concentrated in the center of the cells (see above photos again); histiocytes are different. They may indicate early abortion if they occur in Pap during pregnancy. Of cause I think women will not have abortin in most case. You can mention in your report to ask physicins to pay attention. This patient was a pregnant women with 7 months (may be). Thanks, cz |

You are right about half. Righ about one cell with many nuclei.
What type? Think more. Do you see this kind of multinucleated macrophages?
More than 30 people saw the photos and only Xiaohe had interpretation. If every one give a different guess, I am sure one of the guesses will be right.
I will not tell you until some one writes the correct answer.
